How Many Overs in T20, ODI and Test Cricket?
The number of overs defines how a format feels. Here are the numbers and the typical match lengths.
T20
Each team bats for a maximum of 20 overs. A match usually takes about three hours.
ODI
Each team bats for a maximum of 50 overs. A match usually takes seven to eight hours.
Test
There is no limit on overs per innings. Each team bats up to twice, and a match can last up to five days.
Other formats
Some domestic and league competitions use shorter or different over counts, such as 40 or 10 overs.
Bowling limits
In limited-overs cricket each bowler can bowl only a share of the overs. In a T20 a bowler can usually bowl a maximum of 4 overs, and in an ODI a maximum of 10.
Why overs matter
Overs set the target and the tactics. A 20-over innings rewards fast scoring from the start. A Test rewards patience.
