Hong Kong Sixes History: Winners, Records and Facts

The Hong Kong Sixes began in 1992 and has become one of cricket's most fun events: six players a side, six overs an innings and a match done in well under an hour.

How it started

The first Hong Kong International Cricket Sixes was played in 1992, and Pakistan won that opening edition. England took the 1993 title, with Sri Lanka as runners-up. From the start the idea was simple: short, fast cricket that fills a ground in a few hours and rewards big hitting.

Pakistan, the most successful team

Pakistan are widely listed as the most successful team in the event. They won in 1992 and again in 2001, when they beat South Africa in the final, and recent counts put their total at six after they won the 2025 Cup by beating Kuwait by 43 runs. Different websites quote slightly different title counts for several teams, so check the tournament's own records if you need an exact number.

Recent winners

Sri Lanka won the 2024 final, beating Pakistan by three wickets. Pakistan came back to win in 2025. The field has grown from eight teams in the early years to 12 teams in the modern edition, which is why the 2026 event uses four groups of three.

Format

Each team has six players and bats for six overs. With so few balls, one big over decides games, and net run rate matters in the group stage. In 2026 the group winners go to the Cup semi-finals, the second placed teams to the Plate and the third placed teams to the Bowl, according to published reports.
